  1. NO. Russia is a Soviet State which happens to have Moscow, the capital, within its borders and is located centrally in what is the former Soviet Union. The Soviet State of Siberia is adjacent to Alaska. Russia was the unofficial name for the Soviet Union used in the west. The Soviet Union never referred to itself as Russia.

  2. YES, and at one time a hiker actually walked from Alaska over the frozen Bering Sea to Russia where he was arrested by the Russian army!

  3. yes as close as 13 miles at on point

  4. Yes, and Alaska used to be a part of the Russian Empire until it was purchased by the US in 1867 at the behest of Secretary Of State William Seward. It did not have wide popular support so the purchase was often referred to as "Seward's Folly" or "Seward's Icebox".

By the way, this is the closest country to the US that does not border it. Both the Bahamas (almost 60 miles) and Cuba (90 miles) are farther away.

  5. Their used to be a land bridge that connected the two.

  6. Many years ago you could travel to Siberia over the Strait. It was  a land mass.  The nomads and the elk used it as a crossing point and so many of the traditions and appearance of our native people have been passed down to this country because of it.
