  1. Alcohol is a depressant, not an anti depressant. it actually can make you feel more depressed if you are already in that state.

It's a drug; it's a central nervous system depressant (forget mood depression, that's another issue entirely and alcohol can go either way on that one).  But it's not a barbituate, although it's effects are similar in some respects.  Barbituates are a specific class of chemicals generally used as sedatives and occasionally muscle relaxants.
