  1. lol, whomever said India, who are you kidding?? lol no offense

I can definitely say from experience that it is a great country since it is a developed country after all but can't really say the greatest cause I haven't been to the other developed countries so I'm not going to judge. I lived in a third world country before and ya, so I know

  2. Since you have posted this question in Philosophy, the answer is NO. It is India which has the greatest to offer in spirituality.

  3. America is only the greatest country in the world for a very privileged few.

  4. America, at least until Bush, has the dignity of freedom.  He's making it more like n**i Germany.

  5. Well, America has an oil war going on in the middle east. They have an idiot in the oval office. Their economy is plummeting, because of both the aforementioned. They tend to be arrogant. They are disliked almost globally.

Sounds harsh, but it's statistical truth. I don't much care for America. They have more obesity than anywhere else in the world. They have intense crime rates.  They produce some of the most mind numbing television on the air waves.

    However...

I don't live there. I was raised to revere the beaver rather than the bald eagle. I love the maple leaf, not the stars and stripes. I see how my fellow countrymen are welcomed globally. We have a reputation for peace keeping, vs. Americas reputation for warmongering. Granted, we elect our fair share of imbeciles into office, but none of them has waged wars to line big company pockets, and destroy the little people.

Our national average IQ is 2nd highest in the world, next to Japan. We have a lower crime rate than most other countries in the world, and a higher standard of living.

I was raised to love my country, as were you. Patriotism and nationality are the laces on the nations that hold the shoe that carries the country together.

  6. the greatest ? may be living in Sweden or Switzerland is better . But the US is for sure among the top ten .

now , what makes America the greatest? in my opinion , it is its Constitution . when in many countries you never know what is gonna happen next , you could be sure that on or about the 20th day of January 2009 , Mr George W Bush will no longer be commander in chief , and a new prez will be sworn in.The new prez will swear to protect the Constitution, written some 220 years ago.

Well , it  was not initially perfect

( ignoring slavery , ..) Amendments were made and the improving process is still going on.

Who wrote rhe Constitution ? answer : the Founding Fathers. I am not american but I envy the Americans for these people ( Washington , Franklin , Jefferson , )

One more thing that makes America admirable is that it had a Washington when it needed one , a Lincoln when it needed one , the same is true for a Roosevelt ( FDR ) , a Truman and a Reagan who in my opinion was a great prez.

America also helped improve the life of people on the earth . Henry Ford with inexpensive cars , Graham Bell ( Telephone ) , Thomas Edison ( the light bulb ), Michael Debakey ( heart surgery ) , the Wright brothers (aviation ) and John Wayne who epitomizes the american spirit ..

  7. no !

USa is so young, nobody is lucky all the time,

    the fortune is changing

  8. No.

  9. not greatest, but probably the most useful.

  10. i am an indian and dont agree with one of the user above..spirituality doesnt feed people, it doesnt give us greatest infratsructure..it doenst make us self suffciient either..i would think a combination of Human Values (Morals) and vibrant economies qualify to be great countries..america has the later..i think it could do better in terms of its stand in world politics..but no doubt its people have rather worked hard to get it to where it is.So countries are not great..its its citizens that are..just a view

  11. It depends on what is being use for measurement. But definitely USA is one of the Greatest country in the world. !!

  12. I agree with Travis that "greatest" is purely opinion and a very hard element to measure - as greatest means totally different things to different people.

    However...

I'm not an American and therefore, haven't been indoctrinated to the intense nationalism I observe from the US as an outsider. I'm not picking on it - but to me, such intense, pro-national fervour is worrying because in my mind it indicates a form of lacking self esteem...why the need to drum into a countries citizens that it is the greatest? If it is so - wouldn't they decide that without being told?

My question for YOU is - what exactly then MAKES America the greatest?

I'm an Australian. Yet - I am divided...because I believe both Australia and New Zealand are the best.

We are not the most powerful, and granted, you could invade both in the blink of an eye lid if your nation chose.

We have a comparatively small population.

Like any western nation, we have questionable people in politics. Wait - scratch that - like ANY nation...

We have our environmental issues - especially drought.

And as a comparatively "new" country (we were only settled by Europeans in the late 1700s) - we have no long term 'white' culture - although a very diverse indigenous culture.

But what I believe makes Australia and New Zealand the best is our attitudes - to our fellow man and others.

I - and most Australians, couldn't give a rats **** which country you are from - if you are talking to me, either I like you or I don't. And I probably will - as many of us do, because I think we are an affable, friendly nation on the whole.

We are open to change and ideas. We live in the ideals of loyalty and mateship - to an Australian, it is wrong to walk on someone else - we're all in this together. It's what made us such good soldiers in the Vietnam war, on a side note, I believe.

And we KNOW our place. We KNOW we're not a superpower - and we don't WANT to be. We know we can't tell other countries what's right and wrong - and we don't wish to.

We're not ignorant of other countries. We realise all countries have their strengths and weaknesses - and we accept those.

Best of all...we have our way, for sure, but we're open to other nations...and other people.

I believe our friendliness, loyalty and ultimate peacefulness and ideals of mateship and unity make us the greatest nation...

We look after each other down here. And if the world was to end tommorrow and the few survivors to remain - that's what survival would boil down to...people who can band together through thick and thin to make the world a better place.

  13. The term "greatest" is  a matter of personal opinion, as such no country is the greatest.

But a warmongering country that has a decaying educational system, infrastructure, health care, bickering government, mass obesity, social decay, dissolving freedoms, rapid inflation, is warmongering and a whole plethora of problems has little ground to be called the greatest.

And I'm not unpatriotic.  Im a dissenting, and that is patriotic.  When a nation goes mad, those who truly care for this country like me are willing to point out it's flaws so they can be addressed, not blindly assume it is the greatest-such attitude enables our decline.

  14. No actually, it isn't.  It's the greediest country in the world.

  15. Militarily, maybe.  But that would be about it.  It's not a bad country as countries go; there are plenty of worse places you could live.  But I can't really think of any meaningful sense in which it could be considered the greatest country in the world.

  16. you are the worst county that ever was, destroying all other countries just so you could look powerful, and lots of obese people too.
