Is Amtrak the only cross-country train service in the United States?

Amtrak, officially known as the National Railroad Passenger Corporation, is currently the only provider of intercity passenger trains in the United States.  It was formed under US Government sponsorship to ensure that at least a bare minimum of train service survived once the private operators withdrew such services.

There are many freight railroads, a variety of commuter train services, and some private short-haul trains (mostly for tourists), but to go between cities you're basically looking at Amtrak.

Yes, Amtrak is the only intercity carrier available.  However, there are also many regional, state services available as well like NJ Transit, Metrolink, MARC, Sounder, and New Mexico's Rail Runner just to name a few.

NO... although it is the only PASSENGER service that goes "cross-country.

You can get between cities on the East Coast via regional rail.  For instance you can get from New Haven, Connecticut to Wilmington, Delaware and points inbetween via regional rail.  You just have to transfer a few times.
