Is Ancestry.co.uk, good for Parish Records?

Im tryin to find anything on James Hale, born, I think 1819 but when I type any welsh places in, nothing comes up, all I seem to find is Glamorgan

The ancestry website will have census details of specific addresses, their inhabitants, ages, genders and occupations.

Parish records should be kept at the Parish or if the church has closed may be kept by the council / registry office I think

I'm from Wales too and it doesnt seem to be. I needed the glamorgan ones and there still seems to be nothing there :O)

A lot of Ancestry stuff only goes back to 1837, when civil registration came in. Anything, anywhere, prior to that depends on how good the Vicar was with record keeping.

I've been looking for a Welsh one too, for a friend, but those particular Church records don't seem to have been put into official storage yet, presumably are still at the Church.

Parish records are unlikly to show date of birth. Best you can hope for is a date of Baptism.

For Parish records you will have to go to the local County Record Office or in some places the main Reference Library.

(Looks like you have to make a trip to Wales, I reckon.  Phone up first to see that they have these records).

The IGI contains many of these records, but not all and, as someone has pointed out, they need checking against the real records as some IGI entries are in error.

I have found a James Hale born about 1821 on the 1841 census.

If you know the county, it may be worth checking the family history society for that county. You can find the one you want by googling.

For parish records try www.familysearch.org this is a free to use web site run by the Mormon church.  You can also google the parish's you want to research some one might have transcribed the records.

A word of warning, when ever possible ALWAYS CHECK THE ORIGINALS.

Ive found a Christening for James Hale on 11th Jan 1829 at Hay in Brecon..His parents are William and Mary..They also appear to have another child Christened on 21st June 1835 called Edwin..

People didn't necessarily have Christenings  in the weeks  that followed their Children's births either .Ive come across quite a few Christenings that have occurred in Adulthood.

Generally Ancestry.co.uk is useless for Parish Records.  They have some information but it's highly unlikely you'll find anything useful.

As someone else has said the best place to look is the IGI at;

I've just done a search between 1809 and 1829 and come up with nothing I'm afraid.

The 1841 census may help or if you know when he married the certificate would give his father's name and occupation.  In 1841 it's possible he's still living with his parents.
