  1. If it's the path of your own choosing!

    But can you follow-through?

  2. How about forensic archeology/anthropology.  There are so many sites that remain to be found, and or enlarged upon in either discipline.  Egyptian exploration still will provide data that will give greater evidence of that society, but think about the potential available in Greece, or Turkey, or Afghanistan, or the United States sites of ancient in habitation.  If you are willing to accept that you will not garner a large salary from either of these disciplines, go for it.

  3. Well, if you really are passionate about those things, then definitely it is something that's worth pursuing. It's your life and if you really feel strongly about it, you should follow your heart. You should start to look into some colleges that would offer you the chance to explore this further. Brown University is the only one I know of that has an undergraduate degree in Egyptology! But other schools have good archaeology programs and museums and programs working abroad on digs.

Archaeology is a sub-field of anthropology, which is the study of all things human. Archaeology is specifically about past cultures, studied through the careful excavation of artifacts.

Even if you don't become an Egyptologist, anthropology is a very useful major for an undergraduate. It helps you to be both open-minded but critical, and emphasizes both observation and theoretical readings. It exposes you to a variety of cultures, and enables you to study the past, languages, different countries - basically the entirety of human endeavors. If you ask me, it's far more valuable and interesting to you as a person than another BA in English.

  4. I think that you should go to a school that offers all aspects of anthropology, and some history. While you are taking some of your gen-ed classes for the beginning of college you can take some electives in these classes as well. It will give you an idea of what area you want to go into.

If you do go into anthropology and decide to go to archaeology later it will be easy for you to swich majors because it is in the same field.

I recommend following what you are interested in, its the only way for you to be happy.

I'm studying History and I love it and would not change it for anything. I do plan on studying archaeology later as well, but only to compliment the History aspect of my studies.

  5. I am currently a 3rd-year undergraduate student of cultural anthropology. In order to become a successful archaeologist you must go through a significant amount of schooling. If you are prepared to attempt getting a Ph.D. then I would say go for it. Archaeology is a subfield in Anthropology and so I would suggest focusing on general Anthropology as it can be applied to many careers. If you decide to go for your master and doctorate, you can then specialize in archaeology. Take what I say with a grain of salt because in then end it all comes down to what you think is best for yourself. Discussing this with a school counsler would probably help a lot. Good luck.
