Is Arthur and aardvark or an anteater?

So i have always thought Arthur was an aadvark, but recently somebody told me that he wasn't an aadvark...but an anteater. Are aardvarks the same as anteaters? Are aardvarks a type of anteater? or are they totally different?

ok. this is wierd. i have had this conversation with my friends as well. ive always thought that he was an anteater. im not quite sure. Aardvarks and anteater are two different things.

My son says he's an anteater, but I seem to recall in the books by Marc Brown he is part of an aardvark family.  Go check out the original Arthur book...  It may even say on the cover.
