Is Atmospheric Science a good major? Is being a professor in this field a difficult job?

I was looking and a lot of them have physics and math backgrounds. Is that a stressful job or does it require a lot of publishing? Also, could somebody work part-time in forecasting and earn an MS? I'm wondering about this field and or electrical engineering. Know anybody with this degree that had sort of an unconventional or different career? Would somebody with an atmos sci degree be a good energy trader?

  1. I do not recommend the field right now.  The Global Warming Zealots are making life rather difficult for anyone who dares challenge there "beliefs".

Right now, science is taking a back seat to politics.

  2. Any kind of science background is good for someone who wants a higher degree in an engineering field. I know of a person who is both a physicist and a meteorologist. Its not the same thing, but its quite similar. Atmospheric science is a very good degree, no doubt about it. Being a professor requires a great interest in the subject matter. It can be very stressful, depending on how many classes you instruct, what kinds of classes they are, and how many students there are.

Electrical engineering, on the other hand, is far more challenging because it is more math and physics intensive. Anyone who wants to get any kind of an engineering degree cannot afford to be bad at math. Nonetheless, an engineering degree is very rewarding to those who obtain it. I know an electrical engineer, and he says that a lot of the tough math is not used in the field unless you are some kind of a researcher.

A part time job in forecasting is possible while working on a Master's degree. Just be sure not to stress yourself out too much. If you do, it will take its toll on you.
