Is August (midwest) to late to start growing pumpkins from seed?

  1. Sorry, but yes. Pumpkin is a type of winter squash but the name is a  bit missleading as the vines need a long, hot growing season to produce Fall fruit. Plant seeds next Spring when there is no longer a chance of frost in bright light on hills. 5 or 6 seeds per hill and then thin to 1 or 2. They need a LOT of space and frequent irrigation, no top watering(spraying). Top watering can cause fungal diseases like powder mildew.


  2. You need at least 60 days to grow a pumpkin.If you think you can go until early October with out a frost then try it.What have you got to loose?
