Is Australia boring?

There doesn't seem to be much at all unique to Australia. When people think Australia, they just think blue skies, warm weather and beachers and sadly, I think that's all Australia has to offer a visitor. Admittedly, it's a good place to live which offers a good standard of living but for a visitor, it seems like it could potentially be a bit boring if you're not into water-sports or lying around on the beech.

Australia doesn't have much in the way of history, and the history they do have they are desparately trying to leave behind, mainly the desendance from convicts and the mistreatment of native people.

Even the countryside is just barren and boring, admittedly, Uluru is a unique and interesting attraction but it's so far from any major centre of population a tourist would visit no one goes there anyway.

I don't get what's so wonderful about Australia, it's just big American style malls and beaches.

THey do have the Great Barrier Reef and the Outback where there is a bunch of different animals.  Those are some of the reasons I want to go there.

I see your points but it's definitely not boring. I lived there for six months and they were the best months of my life. And I didn't spend every day at the beach or doing water sports. It just has great cities (especially Sydney- amazing architecture and nightlife) and very nice, welcoming, laid back people. It's also such a clean place all around.

Yes, they don't have as many attractions as America or certain European cities, but it has to be appreciated for what it is. It's different. I believe if you went there with an open mind you would really appreciate it :)

Yes, it is boring when you've been living here all your life.. But it does have some fun times.. well alot of fun times..

Blue skies? Yeah right, its been pissing down rain for a few days..

Even if Australia is a boring place.. I wouldnt want to live anywhere else.

Australia does has history, seriously.. Go read a book!

Dont go saying stuff about Australia.. If you're American, we have so much to say about you guys. Go eat McDonalds and KFC..

doesn't the saying go "only boring people get bored" That aside, I am not sure that you have really done your research, before making that comment. Obviously, cities will be cities, and there will be similarities between them all. There are pubs and clubs and nightlife in the city, and the smaller townships are just that, not as much happening, but nice for a getaway.

In regards to the malls, I have been over to the states a few times and I don't think we have anything quite as huge as those over here. Seriously if you don't like malls etc, don't go there. There is a quite a history around Australia, admittedly different to what you would fine in Europe, but interesting all the same.

I've lived here all my life and am definately not a beach person, but there is so much more on offer than sunning yourself (especially at the moment, as it has been raining all week)

In all honsety though, if you have no interest in coming to Australia, no one's twisting your arm.

Well for some it would be the truth, I live in Far North Queensland and the area attracts many international tourists.

Majority come and go without seeing the area and believe they have seen it all. I do not think many people are cut out for nature/adventure tourism. Some scream at the sight of a flying insect. They seek out 4 star clone resorts and restuarants. These could easily be found closer to home for many tourists at cheaper price.

But for me we have the reef and tropical islands just offshore, ancient rainforest, massive gorges, waterfalls, rich agriculture land with coffee, tea and banana plantations. Crater lakes, platypus, tree kangaroo, rock wallaby, massive limestone cave systems, huge lava tube system, aboriginal rock art, wild rivers, farmer markets, old pubs, remote areas not too far away, the massive monolith of Mt Mulligan, gorgeous 4wd tracks, deserted palm fringed beaches, sugar cane fields, mangoes, lychees, star fruit, black sapote growing in my backyard. Aboriginal art both on rock and for the European style galleries. I can't see what is boring about this place as the diversity is unique in any sense of the word.

So yes I agree that many tourists may not be in my world as they have been removed for so long from nature they have no idea how to relate to it anymore. You see so many do rainforest tours in a coach with little 50 metre excursions into the forest.! Even hear of many that do not even leave the vehicle. Same with the reef though I do applaud non swimmers taking the time to go out, I cannot see how it would be so rewarding if you never actually get into the water.

So not for everyone but for those that get it, some boring drives between places of intense beauty and importance. My advice is to ctach a plane across the boring bits as most Aussies do..when in Rome.... :)

i have to disagree strongly. Australia has plenty of history although it is quite young, i don't think they are trying to 'leave' any of the history behind. All though it is not the normal way of settling it is definitely unique to australia.

The country side is not boring and barren, not all parts of the country are desert, queensland has tropical rainforest melbourne has alot of green countryside as well. There are thousands of things to do when you know where to look

i have lived in Australia for 5 years and still find new and interesting things to do, i have been on holiday within australia about 4 times while only going overseas once. Cities are cities and will be similar everywhere in the world if you want to come and experience the real australia you need to get off the beaten track and actually plan your holiday.

It is the most wonderful country in the world. It is not at all boring and it can mimic every country in the world.  In Western Oz there are farms that look so beautiful that it takes you back to long forgotten summers of youth.  The karri forests are breath taking in more than one way as the thousands of trees clear your lungs and your head. The coast lines are wonderful with Ningaloo reef and the capes near Perth. Perth itself is lovely and has gorgeous parks. You can take a fab train journey all the way to Sydney on the Indian Pacific train....then sample Sydney...wow what a place...I can only sigh when I think of it all ...believe me its really, really wonderful.  Oh and Queensland!!!!!   oh and the Northern Territory!!!! Whatever else you do in your life please visit Australia, it is oh so ...............

hey mate, I live in the USA and I find it so boring. You make your own time, it is not the place you go it is you that knows how to enjoy. What history is for USA or any country that you can enjoy if you don't have interest in history and you have different interests. Why many people go to Australia to live there but you find less Australians willing to leave Australia? I mean to each is his own.

Yeah. I'm not particularly interested in hot weather, either, and the cities look like boring versions of American ones to me.

I may go there one day, but there are many destinations ahead of it on my list!

Yeah, there's an argument for it. I mean, I've lived here for 38 years and look at me...reduced to coming in to Y!A for entertainment!

No, honestly...you'll find similarities in any developed Western country, and malls (and bloody foodcourts, a pet hate) are just an example.

But Australia's a big ol' place, and it covers nearly three climate zones, from tropical to polar. There's great diversity of landscape which people from overseas rarely hear about. This is partly our own fault. In the past Australia's tended to be its own worst enemy when it came to advertising itself...desert & beaches and that's it...why? There's 20000 MILES of coastline and half a continent of red & brown.

But there's plenty more to see than that, moreover, there's a different FEELING here than anywhere else on earth, and that's what people tend to remark on when they come. I remember Bill Bryson writing something about Australia which suggested it was very like Canada...without the boredom.

No No and No Step has not even been here according to his answer No country is boring its what YOU do there that makes a great holiday We have deserts rain forests cities that party all night (despite new curfews lol ) . I came from UK at 13yo and LOVE Australia and would not live anyhere else ...we are NOTHING like America maybe a little like Canada
