  1. pretty sure it is known for hot air balloning

  2. Yes, its got WA's oldest inland town, lots of touristy places like farm stays and B&Bs.  Its very pretty and is great for a driving weekend away.  This is getting towards the best time of year to visit and its worth the trip.

  3. Avon Valley is actually the upper reaches of the Swan river (The river changes its name to become the Avon River the further up you go).

The Avon Valley and river is home to some of Western Australia's oldest communities.  Places like Northam, Toodyay and York date almost back to the founding of Western Australia itself.  There are many heritage listed buildings of historical significance through out the area.  York and Toodyay in particular do have quite a tourist focus for this reason.

Don't forget also that the Avon river hosts the Avon Descent white water event annually, which included Kayaks, power boats and everything in between.

The Avon valley isn't overrun with tourists, it is a working agricultural region and an extension of the greater Perth metro area.  If you are looking to visit the place there is stuff to see and do.  If you are looking to escape the city, its a wonderful place to find a spot to hide.
