Question:

Is B2 'prospective student' visa type a fiction?

I've tried to obtain a B1/B2 'prospective student' visa (in Russia) a few days ago. I wasn't applying for an F-1, because I wanted to enter the US earlier that 30 days before my school starts. So I had my admission letter and my bank statement with me. And everything was fine, I mean they weren't against me entering the country and changing my visa status to F-1 there. But when I ask if they would print the words 'prospective student' on my visa, they told me that such things dont actually appear on the visa itself. But the councelor said that this information will appear on my I-90 form and in my personal records...

So I'm really confused. I hope there won't be any problems when I'll be changing my visa status. What do you think?

  1. Unless you have your I-94 annotated by the CBP officer at the Port of Entry as being a prospective student, the chances of adjusting your status while in the US are practically nil.

  2. Actually Docar, you can enter the United States only 30 days prior to the report date stated on your I-20, not 90.

Regardless of that, George has given you all of the information you need.

  3. Enter using your F-1. You are allowed to enter 90 days before the reporting date shown on the I-20! You also have 60 days to leave!
