I currently have bcbs individual insurance. I am applying for a new plan for myself, and kids. BCBS plan I have doesnt let me add kids I already have. They no longer are convered by their biological dad. I have step kids that also need coverage because their mom isnt keeping her court order to cover them.

I was dx in 06 with mitral valve prolapse. I also have a conditon(non life threatening) called dysautonomia. It causes palpitations and dizziness, but is treated well with Klonopin and Altenol. I have no other health probs and dont smoke or drink. I have had a thourough workup from a cardiologist and neurologist. Nothing wrong there.

I am self employed, so the plan I am trying to get for my family is not with a group. It is individual insurance , directly through their website. I know its a lot harder without an employer or group to be covered. They sent for my medical records, as I listed this condition. I really need this family plan. How likely do you think I am to be denied?

  1. The person above mentioned getting a separate policy for the kids. That is the correct approach, in my opinion. BlueCross will start insuring children after the 8-week check-up, and I have written policies for a number of children without their parents being on the policy. In fact (and this is just slightly off topic), people are starting to remove their children from more expensive group policies, and buy individual policies for them. Employers typically do not share the cost of family coverage, and individual policies are less expensive than group. Individual policies are underwritten for health conditions, while group policies accept pre-existing conditions which raises the cost of care for the group.

So parents, if your dependents are healthy and covered by group, you may want to check rates for individual policies. I saved the father of 2 girls about $75 per month recently when I put the girls on a separate policy..

  2. If you currently have coverage and you are just terminating that coverage to open your own plan then you will not be subject to a pre-existing condition and you will be covered. The only time you wouldn't be covered is if their was lapse in coverage between your old plan and your new plan. If your kids don't have any medical conditions they will have no problem getting on your plan.

    Good luck.

  3. That's a tough one to call. They don't like MVP. At any rate, you may have some options. Some states have insurance for kids. In PA, it's called CHIPS. Another option may be for you to keep your policy, and buy a separate family policy for your kids. Try Golden Rule or Aetna. Call an independent agent who can shop your case around. It won't cost you anymore to use an agent than to try to procure coverage directly. If any of your kids are old enough, you may be able to claim one as an employee, and see if there is a small business association plan you could qualify for, if you have two people-each with his own plan--you just may qualify. It's worth checking out. Or maybe, if you are married, you could say your husband is the second employee. The plus side of the business plan, is that, if you provide a certificate evidencing that you had coverage for the year before the new plan starts, you may not have a pre-existing conditions clause. (every state works differently). At any rate, you are best off having this discussion with an independent agent. Good luck!

  5. You could keep your current policy and purchase a separate one for the children. Instead of applying online, go to a LOCAL independent agent for help and advise.
