Is Badminton dead! – Badminton versus Football
Badminton is the national sport of Indonesia. Although it is emerging as one of the favourite youth game, it lacks behind as compared to cricket and football. Most of the people in the world are in search of two things, the first one is fame and the second is money. Nowadays, the main aim of professional players is to fulfil their desires by earning more money and fame. This leads the most talented players to focus their skills only towards the sports which help them in image building and increase their level of satisfaction by getting more money in return.
Cricket and football players are always more well off than the badminton players. At the national and international level these two sports are considered more important in building the country’s reputation worldwide due to intense competition and money returns.
Badminton players are not given that much of attention and are often not so well treated as the other sports personalities are. Moreover, it is considered as an easy going sport and people think that it is not as competitive as other sports. People are mostly interested in a sport which gives them a strong physical challenge and requires fast action therefore they get involved in other sports like football and they do not take badminton so seriously. People think that badminton is a game which does not requires much talent they mostly perceive it as a child’s game. People think that badminton is more suitable for girls as they are more delicate and cannot do much exertion. Badminton does not deserve this kind of attitude because in real terms it is a worth watching game and should not be ignored.
It is just a stereotype that badminton is a sport with slow pace. It can be proved wrong by watching professional badminton games. Badminton is the fastest racquet sport. Badminton should be treated equivalent to tennis. However, the world gives more attention to tennis and declares it more interesting and faster than badminton.
Badminton is a non-contact sport therefore people underestimate its importance. However other sports like tennis is also non-contact sport but it is still watched and followed worldwide by a larger audience and treated religiously.
Badminton matches often take less time and a player can make a lot of shots in almost 20 seconds at a much higher pace which is quite astonishing. The sport requires certain movements from the body such as running, twisting, jumping and striking. These movements build the body muscles and help in making the body more flexible. Most of the time the players have to make full arm swings which help in building the body in the same way as baseball.
Although as compared to other sports there are less renowned sports players in badminton, but still in the past there have been several famous American badminton players who have always made their presence felt. In China and Indonesia, badminton is becoming more popular day by day. An audience of around 15000 is commonly found watching a match in China and Indonesia.
The reputation of badminton varies from country to country since it is widely speculated as a very slow sport. Badminton is a game which requires certain skills and techniques. It should not be treated as an easy going game because it requires well-thought strategies to defeat the opponent. A badminton player is supposed to be very vigilant because he has to keep a strong eye on the opponent’s moves. Therefore badminton is not a sport that can be ignored. The need of the hour is that these points should be considered and badminton should be given an equal chance to flourish worldwide as tennis has been treated previously.
