  1. You're probably only in trouble of paying 'tourist prices' for things (which, taking into consideration general U.S. rates, is still dirt cheap).

  2. I don't think Banios is particularly dangerous. I actually think that it is a very cozy town to visit, being the town that connect the Andean Mountains with the Amazon jungle.

Probably the main danger at the moment is that Tungurahua volcanoe is currently erupting and the population of surrounding town evacuated last week. With nature you never know, so confirm that Tungurahua isn't erupting before going there. The eruption has been continuos for a few year. Fortunatelly it hasn't been violent but with these type of thing you never know.

  3. Not at all. citizens of baños have a huge devotion for the virgin of Banos. There is this great church very old, and the citizens believe very strongly that they most help the tourist on every possible aspect in order to get extra graces from the lady of Banos. After all they realize that 90% of their economy is based on tourism.

The only recommendation that i have is to be careful in getting into buses late at night. Not all the people in Banos are locals, thieves can come from other cities to rob the tourists.

It is true that the Tungurahua is constantly erupting but the trayectory of the fumes and lava goes to the other side of the mountain where banos is; so no worries about that.

You should eat "melcocha" and sugar cane while there; go to the thermal pools (that is why is called baños) and she the long and thin cascades of the area.
