I've heard a rumour (which has reputedly been denied) that Barclays is 'doing a Northern Rock'. Is this true?

  1. Don't know but I'm sure Northern Rock isn't the only bank with problems, just the only one who had to admit to it.  Watch this space sort of thing I should imagine.  Banks can deal with one crisis at a time, as things stand though I think there are more than one crisis looming - credit crunch, high oil prices, trouble (perceived) with Iran - the world of commerce is very very shaky.

  2. No.

  3. Not as far as I know.  Well not in a Northern Rock kind of way - just in a bad service kind of way.  That is the case in my local branch.

  4. no i don`t think so

  5. they have been said to send them a message find out the truth!

  6. Buy there stock now and they will be out of trouble and you may make a nice little profit.

  7. i hope not!

  8. serve the greedy b******s right

  9. This is the kind of scare tactic that start 'a run' on the bank and cause the situation to arise, even though there was no truth in the original rumour!

  10. No. Northern Rock business is mainly mortgages. It funded them with short term loans, which it got from the wholesale money markets. All well and good until the US sub prime scandal scared the money markets. So NR couldn't get credit. All banks are having this problem, but not as exposed as NR was, with it's stupid business plan.

  11. Northern rock borrowed vast amounts of money on the money markets against there mortgage book only having roughly one third of the capital required.  They were caught out when they could not borrow money to pay the loans as they are always short term.  Barclay's bank have billions at there disposal and  are unlikley to be in the same situation as the 'credit crunch' has easied

p.s N.Rock will still make a profit of 500 million this year

  12. i dont think so

  13. Oh yes.  Get your money out quick.

  14. No, they wanted to take over ABN bank in the Netherlands and the Bank of England wouldn't lend them the money, otherwise no problem.
