Question:

Is Basil same as Sweet Basil?

It's a silly question, I know, but I need to know the answer. I live in a country where Basil is rare. My first contact with Basil was ' sweet Basil ', and true enough, it was sweet and delicious. I fell in love with it, and decided to plant one in Spring. However, I could not find any sweet basil plant around, all of em ' Basil '. So, I assumed that they are the same. I just found out minutes ago that my basil isn't like sweet basil. Or is it my tastebuds. Or could it be my own plant that sucks. Please enlighten me. Thank you.

  1. No. Sweet basil is a specific kind of basil. That which is used in Italian food is typically called sweet basil.

It is very easy to grow. I started the basil plants in my kitchen by buying some fresh sweet basil in the supermarket and putting a few of the cuttings in water. When they developed roots I put them into pots. Now I have the beautiful aroma of sweet basil in the kitchen and fresh basil leaf whenever I want it.

  2. Nope.

Thats kind of like asking if onions are the same as green onions. They taste somewhat similar, but are also very different. Hope this helped :)

  3. There are several varieties of basil.  I believe sweet basil might be the same as italian basil.  There's also thai basil, lemon basil, purple/red basil etc....
