Is Ben Roethlisberger MVP role model material? (Part 1)
So here we have an NFL quarterback. I’ll let you guess who. He stands at six feet five inches tall. He graduated from Miami University. The one in Ohio, not Florida. He was drafted in the 2004 NFL Draft, first round, 11th pick by the Pittsburgh Steelers. Still no?
He won the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year award in 2005 and led the Steelers to the Super Bowl in his second season. My goodness, its Ben Roethlisberger, come now.
So yes, it’s true; he did lead the team to win the Super Bowl in his second season. He became the youngest quarterback to win a Super Bowl at the age of 23. For a player that has done so well, why hasn’t he been selected as Most Valuable Player and why is he hated by the public?
Big Ben was the captain of the baseball, basketball, and football teams in high school. He then went to Miami University, where he was the quarterback. He holds every single major passing record at the school, all of which are still standing today. As a freshman, he passed for over 3,100 yards. In his sophomore year, he threw over 3,200 yards. In his junior year, 4,400 yards through the air. He led the team to an undefeated season and won the GMAC Bowl. His number was retired by the Miami University RedHawks in 2007 for the first time in 34 years.
Philip Rivers, Eli Manning, and J.P. Losman were the other three quarterbacks picked in the first round of the draft besides Ben. Ben was signed for a $22.26 million contract, valid for six years, which also had $17.73 million worth of incentives. Four years later in 2008, Ben signed an eight year, $102 million contract, which will most likely fulfill his wish of retiring as a Steeler.
He led the Steelers to the playoffs in his rookie season after taking over in the second game of the season following an injury, and started in the third game of the season. In the fourteen games that Ben started in, he won all of them. One of the biggest games of his rookie year was defeating the defending Super Bowl champions and undefeated New England Patriots, 34-20. The next week, Ben led the Steelers to win over the undefeated Philadelphia Eagles, 27-3.
Just take a look at Ben’s rookie season. Yes, the one stated above in case you weren’t paying attention. Read it again. Done? Good, now that you know how awesome he is, why do people still not like him?
One of the reasons could be that he had a motorcycle accident in 2006. Ok, so that happens with people. What’s wrong with that? Well he wasn’t wearing a helmet at the time of the accident. He also didn’t have a motorcycle license. And when someone says that Ben had a motorcycle accident, it must be serious. Look at him, he’s like Rambo. And it was a bad accident. Obviously, breaking the windshield of a car with your head is not an easy or pleasant thing to do, but Ben did it. And he was also “alert and conscious” according to paramedics who attended to Ben.
So what did he do?
