Is Ben Roethlisberger MVP role model material? (Part 3)
This is the third part of a six part series of articles discussing whether Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, also known as Big Ben, is worthy of the National Football League (NFL) Most Valuable Player (MVP) award and if he is a good role model.
In fact, McNulty’s own co-worker could have the one that protected Ben from an unjust lawsuit.
However, take another look back, not as far, but to March of 2010. Local newspapers revealed that Milledgeville, Georgia police were investigating allegations for sexual assault at Capital City nightclub. Police had interviewed the woman on the night of the supposed attack. She claimed that Ben had invited her and her friends to the V.I.P. lounge of the nightclub. After Ben encouraged the girls to consume a large amount of alcohol, one of his body guards, who was an off-duty officer at Pittsburgh International Airport, led the victim down the hallway, told her to sit on a stool, and left. She then claimed that Ben approached her, exposed, and followed her into a bathroom as she was trying to get away.
She then said that Ben forced himself onto her and had intercourse. After their friend had been missing for a while, the other girls tried to intervene but another one of Ben’s bodyguards, an off-duty Pennsylvania State Trooper, said that he did not know what they were talking about and avoided eye contact. Later, the body guards did not have any knowledge of meeting the women at all.
In April of 2010, district attorney Fred Bright said that Ben would not be charged. He said that "looking at all the evidence here, I cannot prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt." The accuser also said that she did not want to pursue criminal charges because a publicized criminal trial would intrude on her personal experience. However, she stressed that the accusations still stand; she just did not want to continue pressing charges.
So now you know the three incidents why people have turned on Ben. There are two sides to every story. First, take a look at people who think Ben as gone from hero to zero, and is still a zero right now.
People believe that the Green Bay Packers must do all that they can to stop Ben and the Steelers from finding their way back into a polite society. Not so much the Steelers, mostly Ben.
Critics can always find something to complain about. But there is one argument that they make that has a pretty strong point. After Sunday January 23’s AFC Championship Game, a writer on Sports Illustrated described Ben’s performance:
“This effort illustrated the entire palate of greatness Roethlisberger possesses. . . He improvised, extended plays and showed the will of a champion. Early Roethlisberger managed a run-oriented attack. Later, he picked apart maybe the best secondary in football.”
Wait. “Picked apart maybe the best secondary in football?” Were they watching the same game that everyone else was? In the second half, Ben completed only three passes for 37 yards.
