Is it a city full of rich people like Chicago or Seattle? Or can you get a decent house for a low price? I want to go there.

  1. There are areas which are not so costly

  2. Even though Berlin one of the largest cities in Germany, it is one of the least expensive. I live in Cologne and when I visited Berlin for a weekend, I couldn't belive how cheap things were there. However, I still don't know the reason for this. Anyway, have fun!

    ps. I miss Milwaukee :(

  3. Berlin is very big and nice city. The prices are normal. The expensive city in Germany is Munich.

Rich people are everywhere, but in Berlin you can find a normal price apartments and living cost the same like at the another big cities.

  4. With the Dollar so low you might find it expensive. Some things are more and some less expensive than here. You don't need a car. Matter of fact, you don't want to drive there. Taxi's are all over. Public transportation is very good and not so expensive. Berlin is big. East Berlin is probably still in re-construction. Eating out is expensive and the food is not like here. You don't get water like you do here and they don't put ice in it. Rich people often live very modest. If they live in a house to itself you know they are not poor. Most younger people speak English. The cost I think is pretty much like here in general. Viel Spass!

  5. Among the bigger cities in Germany, Berlin maybe is the least expensive, but that depends on the neigborhood. You'll find houses in Charlottenburg or in the Steglitz district very expensive, while in the former east of Berlin or in some less renowned areas like Kreuzberg or Neukölln in the west, and Treptow, or Marzahn on the eastern outskirts of the city, you might make a real bargain. In general, Berlin is not full of rich people, but is just a big city full of regular people trying to make a living, while still there are areas where the very, very rich live. If you have the money and really want to buy a posh villa, watch out for what's on auction in the several districts of Berlin. The several local courts are obliged by law to publish estates to be auctioned, but afaik it's not on the internet, so you'll have to be there and get yourself informed.

  6. Berlin is very big. So there are for sure affordable suburbs or parts of the city. However in German cities most people live in a rented apartment, not in a house (wether rented nor owned).

Find a Germany or Berlin forum an get some expert advice where to look there.

  7. Europe is more expensive than the United States.

That said, Berlin is one of the most affordable places in Europe.  Apartments can be had relatively inexpensively, food can be very inexpensive, and there is lots to do there that is free.
