DVD's aren't going to be obsolete for a long long time.....not until people stop buying them. It took a while for VHS to die out after DVD gained popularity.

At this point it is between  BluRay and HDDVD with  people thinking that BluRay has a slight lead at the moment because of the amount of movie studios that are backing them solely. The battle is eerily similar to the BetaMax VS VHS so if I were you I would hold off a little while let them figure it out. Both BluRay and HDDVD are backwards compatible meaning they can play (and even upconvert to make them look better) the older DVD's. So no your DVD's are not going to be obsolete, atleast for awhile.
