I'm writing a research paper on Boy Scouts of America v. Dale (2000) and am having difficulty deciding if Boy Scout or Scouting should be capatilized in a normal sentence. For example:

It is also ironic that relationships should be “honest and open” because of the fact that a g*y boy scout’s honesty and openness about his sexual orientation would lead to his expulsion.

OR

It is also ironic that relationships should be “honest and open” because of the fact that a g*y Boy Scout’s honesty and openness about his sexual orientation would lead to his expulsion.

Also, same goes for Scouting.

Cleanliness is necessary for Scouting.

OR

Cleanliness is necessary for scouting.

I think it's capitalized but I'm really not sure.

THANKS! 10 points to best answer!

  1. Yes...capitalize it...they are proper nouns...

  2. Freya's response is on point.  I agree.

  3. "Boy Scout" would be capitalized because it's an organization, which is a proper noun.

"Scouting" would also be capitalized because it's the action of the organization, UNLESS you are referring to scouting in general (e.g. "Scott was scouting for a pencil.")
