Is Brandon Morrow worth $20 million? Experts pose questions
As soon as the Toronto Blue Jays re-signed their starting pitcher Brandon Morrow for whopping $20 million, baseball pundits, critics, former Major League players and analysts started a new debate in the media that whether giving a new big budgeted contract to Morrow was the right decision by the Blue Jays or a wrong one.
Some say, Morrow is a good player and having played in the Blue Jays roster for two years, he knows pretty much about the playing environment of Toronto’s baseball team.
These experts also believe that his re-signing is a great thing for the Blue Jays as they needed him as potential backup for their other starting pitchers.
On the other hand, some experts agree that no doubt Morrow is a great player, but giving him that much money only for three years does not make any sense for a franchise whose recent financial situation is not even stable.
Though these experts are somehow saying the right thing, but having looked at the whole picture, some positive things do come up with reference to Morrow’s re-signing with the Blue Jays.
First, he certainly knows the playing environment of the Blue Jays and secondly he has been a consistent performer for the last two years. On this fact, the Blue Jays’ general manager Alex Anthopoulos has also showed very high regard for Morrow’s game.
He has recently said, “He’s set for life. He’s where he wants to be. He’s in an organization, a city, a country he wants to be in with teammates that he loves. There’s really no downside. There’s continued upside and there’s certainly room for another contract extension for him. It makes a whole lot of sense for him it makes a lot of sense for us, I out there and tried to pitch like Greg Maddux and games where I’ve tried to throw every ball as hard as I could that fine line between controlling your body and then really being aggressive about it.”
Whatever the experts say or these analysts describe about Morrow, the fact will remain that the Blue Jays’ saw something in him before giving him that whopping $20 million deal for just three years. Now only the time will tell whether this deal was right or wrong.
