I'm a 33 year-old male in decent shape (I'm a runner). I'd like to build upper body strength and get in better shape. Thanks.

  1. If you'd like to work on your ground game, sure.

  2. I've always said that nothing gets you in shape faster than having to fight to keep another person from choking you into unconsciousness. Have at it. Have fun.

  3. With all martial arts instruction, it depends entirely on the individual school and its instructors.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in general is excellent for all forms of conditioning.

  4. I believe boxing would highly benefit you especially if you like running because boxing is highly based around conditioning (12 rounds of fighting). Also you dont need to lift weights to get stronger because the work outs and working the bags builds up tons of strength and cuts fat quick!

  5. Certainly. At that age you will find you will not have lost anything from your younger years once you get into it. In fact you will end up stronger than ever before.

  6. Yes. I'm 32 & train with Gracie Barra Texas. The one good thing about BJJ is the fact that good technique always beats strenght. I have tapped guys in training who were very strong, but relied too much on their strength & not enough on technique. In essence, BJJ is all about leverage & positioning.

  7. 34 here, also in good shape.  BJJ is the most technical ground art in the world.  I definitely recommend it.  If you're lucky enough (is lucky the right word?) to be in the LA area, try the Gracie Academy in Torrance.
