Question:

Is Brazilian Portugese very similar to Spanish?

I know some Spanish, and may move to Brazil. So, I am just wondering if they are very similar. For instance, can a Brazilian and a Colombian understand each other? Can they read each other's newspapers?

Gracias, amigas y amigos.

  1. its a little tricky ..

Portuguese speakers can understand much of Spanish..   but not all Spanish speakers can understand Portuguese..        I think mainly b/c Portuguese has some sounds that dont exist in the Spanish language..   and when someone hears it.. they dont recognize it ..

but yes... MANY MANY words in both languages are the same..  or almost pronounced the same..  if you already know spanish...   i dont think u'll have any difficulty learning portuguese

    good luck

  2. Yes, it is simular... but not as simular as American English and Brittish English, for example.

If spanish is your first language, you might be able to "get by" with portugese, but you will still have a lot of problems.

Spanish, Portugese, and Italian are all derived from Latin, but they are all still different.

  3. Looks like Spanish, sounds kind of like Spanish, but it ain't Spanish, and you can't understand it.

Especially true if you "know some Spanish."

    Lo siento amigo.

  4. yes portuguese from both brasil and portugal, spanish and italian and soooooo similar

    for example

    hello how are you

portuguese : (brasil) ola como estou

    spanish                       hola como estas

    italian                          ciao como stai

    and to say  good bye

    portuguese (brasil) adeus/ tchau

    spanish                     adios/ chau

    itailan                              ciao

  5. i have a friend that is brazilian and he speaks to me in brazilian and i speak to him in spanish..we understand eachtoher pretty well..but some words we dont recognize cuz of the pronuciation of it or its a diff. word for it. but they are really close languages. = ]

  6. they are definately different languages which many people choose to ignore! Brazilian portuguese is more like south american spanish than european spanish. There are similarties but if you want to learn to speak it well you need to start from scratch and study it. Reading portuguese is easy however understanding and speaking it is a different story! All the best with it!! Enjoy Brazil - its a super place.

  7. in brazil they speak portugees, but they are brazilians do speak spanish it is common. potugees is mixed between spanish, french and italian
