  1. No, its a city in the county of Avon, that's why people mistake it that it's in wales, actually its england, however Avon lays beyond to wales but Bristol doesn't,

    wonderful city

  2. Bristol is a city in the county of Avon.

  3. Bristol is a city and also a county.  It was its own county, it was then Incorporated into Avon and then reinstated as its own county.  It was awarded city status in 1542.

Just a point population size does not automatically affect whether or not a town becomes a city.  There are no specific criteria - although traditionally city status was given to towns with diocesan cathedrals such as Bristol.  St Davids in Wales is a city although the population there is approx 2000.

  4. Bristol is a city.

  5. Bristol is a County AND a City,

The full title is ...The County and City of Bristol. (Look at the signposts on the way in)

I don't know where people get all this rubbish from.

    1. It is definately NOT a town, it has a population of 500,000 people. That is a bit too large for a town.

    2. It is NOT in Avon (Avon does not exist - it was the name of a council)

There are neighbouring suburbs of Bristol that actually do fall under a different county, most commonly South Gloucestershire.

  6. Bristol has ALWAYS been a county in it's own right, as well as a City.

There is no such place as Avon any more - it disbanded April 1996.  Anybody who still thinks and says it exists is a COMPLETE muppet.

  7. Bristol is a city.

  8. Prior to the creation of the County of Avon Bristol was both a City and  County, when the the county of Avon was consigned quite rightly to history and the rubbish bin Bristol regained its city status only.

The confusion is caused by organisations such as the Police who continue to use the name Avon in there title.

  9. It is a city AND a county.

Up until 1996, Avon existed as a county and that included Bristol. However, it has now been split up into the counties of Bristol, North Somerset, South Gloucestershire and Bath And North East Somerset (BANES). Each now has their own council etc.

  10. As others here have correctly answered,  it is 'The City and County of Bristol'.

  11. No. Bristol is a city in the county of Avon

  12. its BOWF

  13. no

  14. It is a city.

Bristol is not a county because it is a unitary authority, as are South Gloucestershire, Bath & North East Somerset and North Somerset. A county will have two tiers of authority, a county council and district councils where as a unitary authority only has one. Somerset, Devon and Cornwall are counties.

If you look at the name of the council in Bristol it doesn't include the term 'county', instead it calls itself a 'city', whereas Somerset calls itself Somerset County Council.

  15. not sure but i hope Bristol City dont stuff it up again this season and get promoted......Come on The Robins

  16. Bristol is historically, and officially, "The City and County of Bristol".

It was granted County status "in perpetuity".

The word "Avon" means "river" or "waterway" and was something wished onto Bristol for administrative reasons now defunct.

Originally Bristowe, (in keeping with Bristle tradition, the natives added a final 'L'!!) it stood between Gloucestershire and Somersetshire but expanded its boundaries over the years to encompass portions of each, e.g. Bedminster (Bem'ster to the locals) is South of the Avon and was once Somerset.  The area of St. George (Bristol 5) was South Gloucestershire renowned for its coal pits where my ancestors were coal-hauliers from the age of 8!

As you enter the Bristol area you will see signs welcoming you to "The City and County of Bristol"

  17. county

  18. no

its in the county of avon

  19. Bristol is both a city and a ceremonial county.

    Edit

The county of Avon has not existed for some years now, and the poster above me is correct because I had a house in Hanham, a suberb of Bristol, but it's postal address was South Gloucestershire.

  20. The city and county of Bristol, Avon no longer exists and was split into its parts, south glos, bristol, baines(bath and north east somerset etc)

  21. Not. Bristol is a City, and is in Avon, which is the county.
