When you get on the scale in the morning, you may be hoping that it registers a smaller number than the day before -- you may be hoping that you've lost weight. It's the quantity of mass in you, plus the force of gravity, that determines your weight. But what determines your mass?

  1. Not very likely.  they're only going to start the system up this weekend.  they won't be ready for any really serious experiments for a couple more months, perhaps even years.

We're not all going to die this weekend, nor on Decmeber 21, 2012, nor . . .

  2. It's very, very, very small, right?

And it may just be hypothetical too?

    Hmmm...

Do you think they could find Bush's brain, Cheney's morality, Rice's truth and Boltons democracy, while they are at it?

Or are they also hypothetical, or too small to be found... ?

  3. Very likely. They're going to start the system up this weekend. They will be ready for really serious experiments straight away.

We're all going to die this weekend, not on Decmeber 21, 2012.

  4. No.

First particle injection isn't scheduled until September at the earliest and the plan is to work up to 10 TeV (centre of mass) over a period of 2 months.  The collider will then be shut down over winter and working up to the full 14 TeV (centre of mass) will only happen in 2009.

It will likely take many months of data gathering to identify the Higgs boson.
