Question:

Is CV joint grease okay for bearings and bearings on Mountain Bikes?

I have a 5 year old MTB. It needs a lot of lubrications. I re-packed the bearings with the grease from my CV-joint grease used on car's CV-Joint. The grease is mainly molybdenum grease. Is it okay to use? I would think it is better than conventional bearing grease since it is a higher grade. Also, it is way cheaper than most bearing grease sold at your local bike shops. One of my friend told me it is a bad idea just because it is not a "bike grease". So far, it seems to work better than the old conventional bearing grease. Can you tell the pro and cons? If you don't think this is a good idea, can you tell me why? Thanks.

  1. Personally I think it would be fine.     The thing is if someone spent $100 on a set of overpriced "bike bearings" that are maybe at best "hardly noticeable in performance then they'd feel bad using anything other than "Bike Master Millennium Master Blaster" grease in them.    In your case you know what you're doing since you could take them apart yourself and grease them yourself.

That being the case since you're going to be keeping it clean and if or when it gets extra wet or muddy you'll probably clean and service the bearings yourself they'll be fine.

Using regular grease and oil and doing regular cleaning and maintenance on it is far better than "wonder grease" every two years and having a false sense of security that you used platinum plated golden grease.

Enjoy your ride.  It's going to outlast your interest in MTB's or until you get a newer one.

  2. It think you made a very good choice! CV joint grease has moly-disufide which is one of the best extreme pressure libricants. It stays very sticky and does not thicken up in cold weather.

  3. I've used that for that same application and it holds up much better in my opinion.
