Hey guys, I am soon to purchase a new digital slr, and I keep hearing that Canon would be the best to go for! I had a canon slr that i used for about 10 years with film and it was amazing! But i am ready for the digital!! I am looking at a Canon 400d to start with....do you think this is the way to go, or can someone tell me if there are other dslr out there that they think is better!! I a not looking at being a pro, just love taking photos of the family and life!!!

I am in Australia so if anyone knows of any Aussie stores that sells dslr at bargain price that would be great!!

Thank you in advance for your answers

  1. Yes Canon is really great, but it is a bit more expensive, compared to a Nikon, that has the same characteristics. Keep in mind that for Weddings, or Portraits Canon is the best, and for Action, and Sports, Nikon is the best. Also the camera itself can be really good, but the lenses are a BIG priority to getting fantastic pictures anywhere. Try to get a big aperture lens, at least f/2.8, the more open the more you can take, with lower light.

Also a camera doesn't make a good photographer, it just helps a good photographer be capable of taking pictures, you have to be able to take good pictures, in order for the camera to be as good as it can be!

PS. when you get a camera READ THE MANUAL it will expand your knowledge of your camera's capabilities like no other!

  2. i think NIKON is the best , but canon is great also-if it's not No.1 it would be No.2

  3. One of the best ... the other is Nikon.  They are the two that supply most of the DSLR's the pros use worldwide.

Don't get hung up on the marketers pixel race ...

Perhaps the most bag for the dollar, AU, US or HKD is the Nikon D40 with AF-S 18-55 mm ED lens

You will be replacing your camera body every three to four years, so starting out with a less expensive DSLR and spend your budget on lenses at first, you will find that the lenses will last you for decades ... long into your sixth or seventh DSLR body.

  4. TRY... RITZ CAMERA.COM   FREE DELIVERY AND NO TAXES

  5. yup canon is good choice..and nikon does.

but if would to stick to canon, try the latest CAon EOS Rebel 1000D/XS

it has live view mode, 3fps,10.1 megapixel

  6. G'day mate. I own the 400D and I think it's an awesome camera, although the 18-55 lens supplied tends to make the pictures a little soft if you know what I mean.

I am in the process of saving up to buy the 'L' series lenses which are a remarkable improvement but bloody costly.

I purchased mine online and got ripped off with the camera bag and spare battery so I won't give you that link, but I've heard nothing but good feedback from Ted's Camera Store.

    Happy shooting!

  7. If you already have some EF lenses from your old Canon slr, then the 400D would make a good choice. Even if you don't have the lenses, it will still make a good choice (I'm partial to Canon because I own the 450D).

My advice is to shop around or check out the online stores. Ted's and Diamonds are ok, but the online stores are a little cheaper. Some good online stores are Digital Camera Warehouse and Camerastore.

Don't forget that if you go into a retail shop, paying by cash, should almost get as good a deal as the online stores. JB hifi also have dSLRs and do good deals for cash.

If you live in Adelaide, the best place is Photographic Wholesalers (great prices) or if you live in Sydney or Melbourne you should be able to pick up your goods if you buy them online. That will save you delivery costs.

    As an example of prices...

Ted's have the 400D with IS kit lens (only buy the newer IS version kit lens. It's better than the older, non IS lens)...for $899.95

And they also have the 400D with IS kit lens PLUS a Tamron 55-200mm lens for only $999.95

    Camerastore.com.au have the 400D body only, for...$667

If you have a few extra bucks don't discount the new 450D. Body only costs around $995 or with IS kit lens, around $1200. It's a nice camera with a few improvements over the 400D. I, myself, didn't bother with the kit lens, but bought 2 lenses of my choosing, instead. Remember, a good lens is an investment, so try not to buy an ultra cheap lens (EF 50mm f1/8, excluded).

You will need a fast SD card. I highly recommend the Sandisk Extreme III (4GB, with micromate card reader included). These cost around $55-65 online, so make sure you don't pay much more than this price.

Try to shop around as much as you can to get the best deal.

    good luck...

  8. Personally, I think Canon and Nikon would be the best choice. They have been rivals for many years and most professional these days have either one. Since you have been taking pictures in the past with a SLR camera, you should know that it's mostly about the lens you use which produce the best quality pictures. The body is important, but to a certain point. you're going to need to know what you want to look for in a body. And since you've been using a canon slr for about 10 years, it's not a bad idea to stick with them either. You might be able to use some of your old lens if you still have them. The Canon 400d is a good choice to start out with. But if you want to try out a Nikon SLR, I would recommend the Nikon D40. It's very very user friendly, good camera, and cheap. The Nikon D40x and D60 isn't worth the money if you're thinking about looking at them. Other good camera that is made by Canon you might consider would be the Canon XS (coming out some time this year), or the Canon XSI which is also a nice camera which have some pretty neat features.

  9. I personally have the Sony Alpha, and think it's pretty sweet.

  10. Any brand of DSLR will get you the images you want. Pentax, Sony, Olympus, Sigma and Samsung are some other brands you should look at. Some have built in IS while others are built into the lens. Go to a camera store if you can and get a feel for each brands model in your price range.
