Is Chael Sonnen’s trash talking the way to get a title shot? – UFC Special
Known as ‘The American Gangster’, Chael Sonnen is undoubtedly one of the best mixed martial artists today. He made his UFC debut at UFC 55, against Renato Sobral, former light heavyweight champion. Unfortunately, Sonnen failed to make an impression as he
lost to Sobral via submission in the second round. He then went onto face Trevor Pranglev at UFC Ultimate Fight Night 4, winning the showdown via unanimous decision.
Again, he submitted during his third fight at UFC 60 to Jeremy Horn via armbar. This was when Sonnen was released from the UFC. By then, Sonnen’s UFC career was over but no one knew he would make a strong comeback. He challenged middleweight champion Anderson
Silva at UFC 117. Even though Sonnen was nowhere near getting the title shot, he trash talked against Silva to make it happen. Back then, Sonnen claimed that he would end Silva’s unbeaten streak and his long reign as champion. Sonnen’s trash-talking paved
his way to the title shot, but he lost, which was expected.
For some reason, Sonnen proved his mettle against Silva by dominating the champion for almost 4.5 rounds. However, The American Gangster submitted during the final seconds of the show. The fight he had put up against Silva was surprisingly good and even
the champion praised him for it.
Sonnen’s ambitions of becoming the champion did not end with Silva’s defeat. He wanted a rematch, believing he was just seconds away from ending Silva’s career. This time, Sonnen went through the route every fighter does. He defeated Michael Bisping last
year to score a title shot at Silva once. Earlier this month, Sonnen took on Silva. It was UFC’s biggest fight of all times. Sonnen worked his ‘trash-talking’ magic to create hype for the show and it worked.
Nevertheless, Sonnen once again fell to Silva, and this time it was a second round knockout defeat. It was the first time fans were actually counting on Sonnen but he let them down. His performance against Silva in the rematch was nothing close to his first
performance. He lost and he lost bad, making every fan boo him.
