Question:

Is Cherry Laurel (Prunus lauroceracus) toxic to sheep?

One of our fields contains some cherry laurel trees. These are currently caged to prevent browsing by deer and grazing by sheep. The trees are outgrowing their cages. Does anyone know how I would find out whether sheep find the leaves palatable, and if they are likely to be poisoned if they do eat them? Thank you.

  1. Actually, cherry trees are normally poisonious only when the leaves are wilted or otherwise damaged.  Green and fresh is ok as is dried up and brown.  Wilted and it'll kill goats and sheep.  Years ago my mom lost three adult goats after railroad workers cut brush along the tracks and let the cut trees lean against and over the fence.  It causes cyanide poisoning.

  2. Cherry Laurel is harmful if taken by animals in a large quantity. Sheep's lips go darkish blue if they have eaten them a lot. Contact the nerby doctor and give them nondrolone.

  3. if this is what we call choke cherry then yes it is poisonous to all ruminants

  4. Yes it will kill your sheep if they eat enough.

  5. Almost all plant parts contain hydrocyanic acid and are poisonous.
