Question:

Is China a safe place for women?

I am going to be living in China for four months with my wife. I will be working most of the time I'm there and she really won't have much to do. So I was wondering if China is a safe place for women to go out and shop or eat out alone.

  2. Yes, I lived and traveled there as a single woman, sometimes traveling alone. I never had any problems. Just use common sense--ask local friends about bad neighborhoods and avoid them, don't walk at night alone, and don't use a purse that is easy to snatch. Some thieves may ride on motorbikes and grab shoulder purses as they go by---however, this happened to a woman while she was with 2 guys, so it applies to any situation, not just walking alone.

  3. Depends on which part of China. If big cities, not too much problem. Just as any other countries, do not go out at night alone at isolated places or something like that.

It definitely safer than those muslim-extremist-countries - where rape is legal - if the woman do not wear appropriately.

  4. Yes it is one of the safest places in the world.  I've traveled alone there twice and had a friend who worked there for four and a half months and was there alone with no problem.  There are police patroling the streets and are widely visible at all hours.  While I was there I would take public transportation and walk alone very late in the evening and I always felt safe.  I feel safer there than I do at home.  She'll be fine so don't worry, just enjoy.

  5. It is safe but use common sense and be caution, ok? Like any other country, there is no 100% safe place. There are pickpockets , criminals in any country.

Avoid the dark alley at night.

  6. It is generally safe compared to other places. Just keep in mind to check your surroundings.

Also, please don't do what 鬼宿 did. There is no reason to walk down the alley at 1 am in the morning. Just because nothing happened to her doesn't mean it was a wise or a safe thing to do.

  7. Can't be any safer, I walked in an alley alone at 01:am, nothing, just dog barked, you should be worried about pickpockets than rapists

EDIT: To white shooting star of HK, well I was working overtime so came back home late~~~but you're right, I try not to do it again, it's dangerous after all

  8. Well I am sorry I cant answer your question.

I have never been in China before.

I am just writing to tell you that your wife is very fortunate for having such a sweet husband who worried about her safe and take her on trips to shop!!!!!

  9. it really depends which part of china your going but been careful at night when your in Shenzhen or small towns

  10. yes, it's safe. but be practical; even in singapore where i live, a place reputed for its low crime rate, i still got to be careful when i'm alone, even in the day. just be careful. don't do anything stupid like walk around at night alone.don't offend anybody. then if something happens, you will have brought it upon yourself.

but then, the chinese are really kind and friendly people. learn a few words of chinese if you're not chinese, and if you're in trouble, asking any chinese will be ok. the chinese are very helpful. when i was in china alone, i was walking along a main road at night and some people came over to ask if i was okay. they said they were worried and though i said that it's ok, they chose to walk me back to my hotel.

i'm chinese-korean, but they don't treat westerners any differently. your wife will be fine. just exercise the same caution you exercise in your own country. china isn't exactly a lawless place. enjoy your stay.
