Is Chlorofluoromethane toxic?

  1. There are actually three chlorofluoromethanes:

    chlorotrifluoromethane

    dichlorodifluoromethane

    trichlorofluoromethane

    I don't believe that any of them are particularly acutely toxic.   I don't think that it's good to be exposed to them for long periods of time as any such material absorbed by the body needs to be removed through the liver and, being non-natural compounds,  could give the liver some challenges.

    They can be a problem in a closed space because they would exclude oxygen and being heavier than air would migrate toward the bottom.   So,  just like a tank filled with nitrogen,  the bottom of a tank with one or more of these materials present could cause unconsciousness and death due to lack of oxygen.

    But that's not considered real toxicity.


  2. well, its an organic halide and halides (Chlorine, fluorine etc) are usually pretty nasty.  So i'd say, yeah it be toxic!
