  1. Patterson isn't as good at long range and he knows that.  He lets other people take them because they have a better record at them and in the end, it's all about the points and the win.

Montgomery is the same...Steyn has a better record at long distance kicks, so he takes the ones from the halfway line and such, because he's more likely to score.

It's not that either of them are scared or don't want to mess up their record, it's because they know their capabilities and they know other people have better chance of scoring than they do, and they want their team to win.  It would be retarded if they were selfish enough to take the kicks and missed, if they knew that someone else could take them and score...it could lose them a match..

  2. Everyone knows their limits, and Chris Paterson is not someone who passes on kicks normally UNLESS he knows someone else will have a better chance of landing it.

You wouldn't give a kick to Dan Parks unless you thought you couldn't do it. He's not as good a kicker as Paterson although he's still plenty good enough.

  3. No he hands it over because he doesn't have the range.

  4. No don't actually believe he is thinking of records. He knows his range and is aware that some kicks are just out of his range. Wales are lucky as they always have Gavin Henson on the side lines who has an enormous long range boot. Johnny Wilkinson tried a kick yesterday which was out of his range and pointless trying it. These guys are professional sportsmen who know their abilities.

  5. He probably dose'nt posess the kicking power to make these kicks and rather than risking it and going for glory he hands it over to somone more capable for the sake of the team.

  6. Chris Paterson isn't that great a kicker. He knows his limits.

Percy Montgomery just does it to make himself look good. He's more than capable of doing long-range kicks, espscially when he plays at Loftus Versfeld Stadium (he has no excuses, since the ball travels further there)

Some people are no good at long-range kicks. I saw the Hurricanes in the 2006 super 12 grand final. David Howell was letting Piri Weepu do all the kicking because he can't kick anything from more than 40 metres. Even though Piri Weepu can't kick for $***. Mind you, I left after ten minutes so I could watch the match at a bar, since there was so much fog.
