  1. Yes very much so. Utilities are excellent long term investments, especially in down markets. You want to look for companies that have their fingers in both sectors. Coal mining is somewhat over bought as of late but investing in Utilities that have their Coal prices hedged for several years is a winner.

Nuclear plants will soon be popping up across the country as the latest states both Kansas and Missouri have started a trend that allows the builders to pass the cost of building  Nuclear facilities on to the customer. This is going to be a huge boom for the industry as electric is going to be taking a large share of what now belongs to oil.

  2. Nuclear definitely. Coal will peak sometime soon after oil peaks (which means the dropping of production rate will drive the price high.)

  3. China is building a coal-fired plant every week.  France gets 80% of their energy from nuclear power.  One wonders why the USA continues to be held hostage by the extreme environmentalist wackos who fight coal and nuclear use.  The reason is we have no leadership, instead we have energy policies that are driven by extreme green fringe groups. We have an energy policy that puts corn (via ethanol mandates) in our gas tanks instead of in our food stores or to feed livestock.  This has led to food price inflation and does not one thing to reduce the price at the pump or to reduce our dependance on foreign sources of energy.

  4. Yes. Coal has a bad reputation. Nuclear waste is exaggerated. Both of these sources of energy are better longer term than oil. We are going to gradually see a shift in energy consumption. Solar is also a good investment. As always buy these industries on the dips. Long term they have much higher to go and will be strong industries for decades.

  5. I think so. Coal is taking a breather right now--the big coal companies like Arch and Peabody have been down for the last few days, so this may be a good buying opportunity. You can also invest in the ETF's NLR (that's the nuclear one) and KOL. Those have been down, too. Long term, the world is going to Nuclear energy ( lots of nuclear plants are being built in China, India, and other places through out the world). The U.S. owns 30% of the coal reserves in the world. Cleaner technologies and coal liquification ( to gas fuel) are improving all the time. With oil at or past its peak, and around $140.00 per barrel, these look like good alternatives, and so do wind technology, geothermal, etc...

  6. This is good only for short term.

This may not be good for long term as people will realize their foolishness as coal is bad for environment and nuclear has a very serious waste disposal problem.
