  1. In June, Costa Rica will be in the midst of their "green" season.  They call it that because they don't want to use the word, "rainy" or "monsoon."  But we went in late July and while there was some rain, that was maybe two days of the 14 day trip.  That being said, Costa Rica is beautiful at all times of the year, due to its position.  It is especially lush during the green season.

I do recommend going in June.  There are fewer travelers than in our (North America) winter months, and you can usually find a sizzlingly good deal on airfare, as long as you book early.

While the most expensive South American country, you will find that Costa Rica accommodations are no more expensive than those in the U.S., and the food is ridiculously cheap.  We bought a giant jug of water and three or four assorted bakery items for about $6.00 USD and took them back to our hotel, $55 USD.  We did a lot of grocery shopping for snacks and such, but for example, we found a french restaurant with 3 lobster tails for $11 on the coast.

Money aside, Costa Rica has beautiful sights and it depends on what you want to see.  We don't like transiting around much, so we took two weeks, went from San Jose (city) to the tidepool beaches at Mal Pais, rented $45 four-wheelers and zipped to the Montezuma waterfalls for a day, went to Monteverde to see the rainforests, and then to Arenal, to see the volcano and bungee-jump off of a 165-foot cliff.  And two students managed to do this on $2600 for food, lodging, and activities.

We pretty much ate gourmet meals every day, set our own pace, and arranged transportation on the fly for about $29/pp in 2005.   If you're not into going-it-alone, there are often great prices on tours.

In addition to waterfalls, beaches, rainforests, and volcanoes, CR also has a turtle-hatching ground up North and countless more nature reserves.  It's an awesome place to go.

  3. Hi Jerah,

The question is: what do you like to do? Costa Rica has many attractions for many preferences. Ultimately you need to carefully consider what kind of traveling you like to do and what activities you would want to partake in Costa Rica.

June is a great month to visit the country and you can get lodging from $10 to $1000 a night depending on what you want and how much you are willing to spend.

    Good luck,

    Carlos
