Is Costa Rica expensive?

My husband and I are planning a trip to Costa Rica but not all meals are included. Is going out to eat expensive? What can we expect?

Living in Costa Rica you can enjoy a leisurely walk down to the farmer’s market each day for the ripest, freshest foods at a fraction of the cost of what you’d pay most everywhere else in the world. Eating out at imported foreign chains, like McDonalds, Burger King, or TGI Friday’s will cost a little more, but still less than back in the States.

Getting the most out of eating in Costa Rica: Bocas and fresh fruit

Appetizers, known as bocas, are served with drinks in most bars. Often the bocas are free, but even if they aren't, they're very inexpensive. Popular bocas include gallos (tortillas piled with meat, chicken, cheese, or beans), ceviche (a marinated seafood salad), tamales (stuffed cornmeal patties wrapped and steamed inside banana leaves), patacones (fried green plantain chips), and fried yuca. Tacos, tamales, and empanadas (turnovers) also are quite common. Making an evening and full meal out of a long list of bocas is easy and enjoyable.

You can travel on $20-25 each and live quite comfortably during your stay.

Food is cheap.  If you eat in a "soda" ( a small restaurant that does not serve alcohol) an average meal of rice, beans, salad and chicken or beef or pork in a sauce  costs about $3.00.  If you go to fancy touristy places you will pay a lot more.

Once you get out of San Jose it's a beautiful country with friendly people

not sure bout the price there.. i do know it was like $403 for a round trip flight to jamaica and back.... then you don't need that much money. just get used to chicken beans and rice! this is on the drug and crime and gang infested North Side of da Island! but i lived with a guy for about a month and made really good friends with everybody on his street.

No, not really. Just depends where you eat. Some places serve grilled meat and fruits for just 4-5$. But beware of pork, it can contain harmful bacterias if its cooked wrong. Good luck!

Order the casados. They cost about (less than) $4 a meal and they are great. Just ask for the entree and they fill your plate with all kinds of good food.
