  1. Crew (better known outside the US as rowing) is an Olympic sport, and the first intercollegiate sporting event held in the US was a rowing race, so, yes, it's a recognized sport in that sense.

Whether it is a "sport" at American high schools is different in different areas of the country:  In the Northeast and the DC area--maybe in other areas, too--there are recognized scholastic leagues, and rowing is a school sport just like football or volleyball.  In other areas, a high-school athlete has to go to a rowing club or a program sponsored by some other group, like the local parks department.  In that case, the athlete's accomplishments may or may not be recognized by his/her school.

Many colleges have rowing as a sponsored sport, but at others, rowing is a "club" sport, meaning that the athletes must support themselves by paying to row, holding bake sales, selling T-shirts, etc., even though they may be competing against athletes whose participation is subsidized by the college/university.  If you're thinking of rowing in college, be sure to check with the rowing program!

  3. "Crew" is a form of rowing, and therefore can also be a sport.

    Crew Basics:

There are two types of rowing. In sculling, the rowers have an oar in each hand, while in sweep rowing, they have both hands on a single oar.

Team rowing is usually in teams of 2, 4, or 8. In teams of 4 or 8, there’s often an extra person in the boat called a coxswain who coaches the rowers and steers the boat instead of rowing.

One of the most important terms in crew is SPM, or Strokes Per Minute. The more strokes a team can row in a minute, the faster the boat will move through the water.
