according to me, we all should blame ourselves for that! i mean how many of us if get a chance to go to a cricket match and watch it live or to watch a hockey match live would go to see the hockey match instead of the cricket match???? the answer is actually NO ONE except the one who hates cricket( who are very rare) or the one who loves hockey who too are very rare!many of us blame the players of other sports that they do not perform well! why should they perform when they do not get the respect for their job! they don't even get good facilities forget about their salary! they aren't endorsed by any product because we would rather like to watch a cricketer instead of other player! and many of us blame the media too and may be they are responsible a bit for that but less than us! may be they are responsible for only 0.01%!

The respective boards should take necessary action to improve the standard..The sponsors should also concentrate on them..If our football team was selected for worldcup,we will watch it..No one is saying we will not watch football,hockey,tennis etc..The spectators are ready..Its they players should perform well..Recently our football team won the cup..They should be consistent..If they,everyone will watch them too..

I think, hockey's popularity is at a standstill.Nothing can be done to change that. It belongs to the yesteryears, and today's generation will prefer cricket than hockey. Every one will be interested in the outcome of a game, but that does not mean, one should be at the stadium to watch the game and cheer for India.

But there is ample following for European football in India. Why can't it be changed so that they support Indian Football? Lack of Publicity. Recently India won the Nehru Cup, The AFC Challenge cup 2008, and had a decent run in their tour to Portugal. We don't want to know much of Indian Football, 'out of sight, out of mind'. We just want to know, whether India won a match or not. And our interest dies down. And cricket is the scapegoat.
