Having heard about the recent earthquake which struck the epi-centre of Ica, my heart goes out to all Peruvians affected by this unfortunate disaster. Having said that, I am somewhat concerned about my upcoming trip to Cusco (Peru) for a volunteer project sometime mid October 07. Can anyone tell me if and how this earthquake has affected Cusco, if at all? What about in the not too recent past of the 1974 earthquake - is Cusco sheltered from such occurences? I have searched the web but no mention is made of Cusco in the articles I have read so far.

Any information will be much appreciated. Thanks!

  1. cusco is not affected

  2. while nothing in cuzco may have been damaged, it is not true that they didnt even feel it. People in Cuzco felt the earthquake but it wasnt bad or anything.

My grandma lives in Cuzco and she called us to say that she felt something but barely anything got damaged.

  3. Ica was effected the most. we need to get as much AID & SUPPLIES to the people down there. pls help in any way possible.

  4. Hi Constance, no Cuzco is not affected. Cuzco is fine, they didnt even noticed anything there, the earth did not shake. In Lima all flights have been opened now so things are ok. There were no damages at the airport, people are flying as normal and then from Lima you fly straight to Cuzco. All the damage is in the south of Lima, very very far from Cuzco. Even the 1974 earthquake did not affect Cuzco as it was in Huaraz, north of Lima. Just be calm, everything is perfect in Lima and Cuzco so you will have no problem whatsoever.

Thanks for your nice words, people here are shocked, we have lost more than 450 peruvians.

  5. Why are you concerned?  That is like being concerned about driving from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh in October because a bridge collapsed in Minnesota in July.  First of all the earthquake was caused by a fault in the Earth's crust caused by the collision of the Nazca and south America tectonic plates.  The fault line is near the coast of Peru.  We also have fault lines running along the US Pacific coast.  I am sure the folks in Colorado are not worried about that.  Cusco is far, far from this tectonic activity.  Even the night of the quake and the morning after there was no delay in flights in Lima or any other transportation services in Lima.  So why would anything at all be affected in Peru by October????

  6. no, cusco is not affected. but they did feel the earthquake.
