  1. No it isn't. Cysteine is an amino acid with the following structure...

    HS-CH2-CH(NH2)-COOH.

    It's not a hydrocarbon because it is made up of more than just carbon and hydrogen.

  3. hydrocarbon essentially means organic compounds which ONLY contains carbon and hydrogen. Cysteine is based on hydrocarbon backbone, but it has other functional group like thiol, amine and carboxylate groups. Hence it is more appropriate to label it as an amino acid ( given the structural formula it has) rather than calling it Hydrocarbon.
