He has 4 rings.Career .315 hitter, and a career .975 fielding% which is ranked 3rd among shortstops in the league. And jeter has a possibility of setting the hits record as a yankee and maybe the MLB.

  1. NOOO... He's pretty good, but your forgetting HONUS WAGNER

  2. Omar Visquel is the best fielding shortstop in the last 60 years, or so.

  3. I personally say no...but you could easily make an argument that he is.

David-Top 15? I hate the Yankees but I'd say Jeter is a top 5 SS without question.

  4. no but he is one of the best shortstops.

    just not the best ever.

i'm a yankee fan don't get me wrong here

but he just isn't the best ever...

his 08 season average is a bit lower than usual too even though it still is pretty good (.290ish)

the only shortstop that comes to mind for me that is better than jeter in my opinion is cal ripken jr. though there probably are more

  5. In terms of leadership, no doubt about it.  But Cal Ripken Jr. reinvented the position from a scrappy defensive player with little offensive skills, to someone who can field the position and can be an offensive weapon.

  6. No.

  7. pahahaha NO.

I personally think Michael Young is better [present day].

He has a friggin .986 fielding pctg. FIRST in the league. That's amazing.

And second in the order ain't half bad either.

  8. Hounus Wagner

    Ozzie Smith

    Nuff' Said

  9. No he is one of the best and THE BEST today.

  10. No.

Rings are team achievements, not individual achievements.  Fielding percentage is one of the worst ways to judge an infielder I can think of.  http://www.fieldingbible.com/  There's an article by sabermetrician Bill James showing that statistically, Jeter is very possibly the most limited shortstop of all-time defensively. He will not set the Major League hit record.

He is nowhere near the top in my opinion.  Among those I would take over him: Cal Ripken Jr., Honus Wagner, Ernie Banks (didn't really play shortstop his whole career though), SS Alex Rodriguez, Joe Sewell, Miguel Tejada, and possibly Nomar.

  11. He's not even the best Yankee shortstop ever  . . .

  12. I think Honus Wagners the best, but Jeter's in the top 15.

  13. Derek Jeter is a Great player don't get me wrong and is a legend of the game already.... but

you are missing some of the Greats that played before him.

Honus Wagner, Cal Ripkin Jr., Ernie Banks (even though did not play shortstop entire career), and Ozzie Smith all come to mind when I think of shortstops.

Honus Wagner has near 3,500 hits and drove in over 1,500 RBI's and he was lightning quick for the Pittsburg Pirates and also has a career .947 fielding percentage.

Cal Ripkin Jr. was a career .276 hitter and is a part of the 3,000 hit club. He was a 19x all-star and 2x AL MVP and had a .977 fielding%.

Cal was also very derable as he holds the record for the most games played in a row with 2,632 consecutive games played with the Baltimore Orioles.

Ozzie Smith was a career .262 hitter and had over 550 stolen bases. He was a 15x all-star and has a career .978 fielding%.

Ernie Banks was a .274 hitter and had over 500 homeruns. He was an 11x NL all-star and a 2x NL MVP.

Derek Jeter in my mind is one of the top 5 shortstops of all-time behind Cal Ripkin Jr. (1)  Honus Wagner (2) Ernie Banks (3) Derek Jeter (4) and Ozzie Smith (5).

  14. He isn't the best shortstop on his own team.

  15. I think he could be he is the best heads up player in the whole league.  He has great statistics and he plays with a lot of heart.

  16. YESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESY...

  17. I think Banks and Ripken were better. A-Rod was way better when he was a shortstop.

  18. maybe but ernie banks was a good shortstop too

  19. The best ever? Not quite.

He's not even the best shortstop on his team.

  20. I think Cal Ripken is the best SS ever.

  21. that's a negitive

  22. I would say he's not the best ever but  I would put him right at the top of this list  as one of  the greatest.

  23. No, Jeter is good but not the best. Forget the Yankees, Tampa Bay is doing better right now with a bunch of no body's. Hall of Famer Ozzie is better than Jeter, in my opinion.

  24. He his pretty good, but there have been better. But i would rank him in the top five.

  25. not the best ever, but he is a decent shortstop. he is somewhat over rated, though.
