I bought a bottle of cough syrup, and looked at the label and it said that the active ingredient is "Dextromethorphan HCL, USP". What is the ",USP", and what does it do?

  1. Yes.  USP refers to Stands for United States Pharmacopeia which is a non-governmental, not for profit organization that strictly adheres to certain standards of purity.  So USP may be more pure that's all but it is the same chemical.

  2. yes,just like adding"officially

  3. usually when an ingriedient is listed on a drug product the manufacture does not go to the extra trouble(space) to list the extra information that it conforms to USP standards.
