I tried loading the app on my laptop to use the modem, but for some reason couldn't get it to work right. Maybe this year.

Anyway, AFAIK, the app itself is free. Because the calls are are toll-free, using your landline will not accrue any additional charges.

When you vote via a cell phone, there is a minimum charge of about 99 cents per call charged to your phone, ( for text. )That is how all these new reality shows make some money. If 10,000 people vote, they have not only got the vote, but around $10,000...(It does save money to use the toll free 800 number to vote.!!)

and yes, its a toll free number....but its very difficult to get thru!!

You can dial 1-866-idols-01 or dial 1-866-idols-05 All contestants had 2 different numbers this week.

you get charged for the text message when you send in your idol contestant number if say 1 contestant is text number 55678 you get charged for a text call and each one you make to vote standard text message rates apply
