Is DnD Insider useable for 3.5e?

I know that the DnD insider application for playing over the internet is made for 4.0, but is it useable for 3.5e? I like the latter better, and would be interested in buying this if I could use it to play 3.5e. I know there'd be no official support, but is it possible? Or is there a better alternative for playing online?

  1. don't buy any thing, unless you need the fancy graphics and what not, just fine a forum and do PbP(play by post), I would recomend the giantitp.com forums.

  2. While Insider probably will mainly be usable (assuming they work the bugs out), there will be some differences you may have to adjust for (movement, for example, as 4E doesn't use the every-other-diagonal rule). A few free tools I've played with are OpenRPG and Maptools -both have their quirks, but all-in-all get the job done.

  3. There are plenty of free virtual tabletops out there. D&D Insider is in a bit of a state at the moment - it's not anywhere near ready for release. Can't say for sure that it _won't_ be able to cope with 3.5 but I wouldn't get your hopes up. As I understand it, it's going to be very specific and aimed at selling us content for 4.0.
