Question:

Is Dubai Only For the Wealthy Traveler

I know they have the only ski resort in a desert and that's the only place in the world that has it. They have the largest gold gallery there as well as 3 of the largest shopping centers in the world.

Is Dubai only for the wealthy traveler or wealthy citizen who resides there? Seriously?

  1. I do not know what you call being a wealthy traveler. Many travel agencies buy contingents of airplane seats and hotel rooms for different seasons on different prices. That is the same with all holiday destinations worldwide.

You do not have to be "wealthy" to be able to book a flight and a hotel to Dubai. What can make a trip expensive are the things you may do beside the paid ticket and hotel costs. Going shopping, paying entrance, having dinner, going out, etc, etc. It's all up to you. You can take a look at Ski Dubai without visiting the same and paying for it as you can visit the gold souq without buying anything. Means, you saw both without spending any money.

Dubai/UAE got rich by oil. The UAE especially Dubai knows that oil will not be there for ever. Therefore Dubai focus on tourism. To compare with other hot spots it means to be bigger, higher etc. Just one superlative after the other to attract tourists and investors. The UAE tries to catch up in within 50 years whereas other countries needed centuries.

Well, like I said before, I do not know what "wealthy" means to you not knowing where you are from. But  Dubai got something for everybody. Where is a will, there is a way. I am quiet sure if you are smart enough you will be able to book a last minute fly and a budget hotel.

    Take care.

  2. Originally there wasn't anything going on there but some fishing and some date farming.  Then there was oil.  The oil revenues were put into infrastructure (including a world class port) as well as commerce.  Now oil revenues are the minority of income there.

The reason that it is "happening" all of a sudden is that their income has been steady increasing and they are pouring it back into assets.  Their port is busier than ever and the oil they are selling is going for as high a price as ever.  Also, they are the center for banking in the Arab world.

Do you have to be rich to go there?  No.  There are many people living and working there on a shoestring budget.  Of course, in order to have any fun, it helps to have a fat bankroll.

  3. I think you definitely have to have the money to back up a visit there.

  4. Naw, you just hang at the mall all days and guys usually let you have a toke. I once make a foot long doobie but I cannot remember if it was that really good stuff.

  5. Dubai is geographically very small and its oil reserves will be exhausted in the near future.  The "happening" you are asking about is because Dubai knows it MUST create a sustainable, diversified economy to provide for "after oil".  Part of that new economy is tourism.

You don't have to be wealthy to affford a visit to Dubai, but the tourism industry is oriented toward western visitors (Europeans, Americans, etc.).
