Question:

Is Dublin an interesting place to visit if you are a college student? And does it have good nightlife?

I want to travel with my boyfriend to Europe, but we are both college students and a little short on money (i.e. can't go to Paris, or Rome, etc.) After looking around I noticed that Dublin wasn't that expensive (in reference to airfare and hotel prices). But I'm worried it won't be very "fun". I was hoping someone who has gone before could answer my question. Thanx :)

  1. Dublin is a phenomenal city.

Great night life. I am surprised to hear that housing is still affordable. While I was there (in college) Ireland was still on the Punt and you could stay in B&Bs and Guest Houses for very little money.

These were typically in someone's home but still very private.

Check out the Board Failte for information on housing.

As far as how fun it will be...that's up to you. I've visited over 25 countries and I've found that you can have fun anywhere if you have the right attitude and the right company. Hope this works out for you.

  2. the temple bar area of dublin is the ''fun'' place to go, but it gets very crowded and a bit wild at the weekend, an alternative may be to go to the st stephens green area, it is situated at the top of grafton street which is the top shoping area, you may find local musicians in the small pubs, but like any large cities anywhere, just ask a taxi driver, they will know whats happening at any given time

  3. Yeah it's fun if you go for the nightlife. But there's nothing to see that even compares to Paris or Rome. A good thing is that all the bars and clubs are concentrated in the same area as it's a small city so you don't need to run around the place with the metro or the buses as you would in Rome or Paris.

  4. Dublin is a fantastic place to visit, especially when you're young. Today it is a multi cultural city with lots to offer from architecture to the arts, one can have as much fun in a Dublin pub as a U.S, nite club, not that Dublin doesn't have an abundance  of nite clubs. I would visit some of the college web chat rooms for some advise as there are plenty of young American college kids studying there.

Try University College Dublin, Trinity College and Maynooth.

College kids would be more helpful to you than an old relic like me.

  5. Dublin is horrendously expensive!!!! Eating out is at least € 50 per person for dinner, and that's not including wine. I got a vodka and tonic in a disco bar, they charged me €6.60 for it, which is outrageous compared to other parts of Ireland. A pint of Guinness is now more than €5. Taxis are also pricey, and then double after a certain time in the evening. Public transport! €1.40 for a one-way ticket on the Luas (tram system), that's just in one zone. Then there are clothes, sights, snacks .... car hire in your case, which will cost you ... car insurance is very expensive here, and this will reflect in the cost of car hire, but you don't need to hire a car if you stay in Dublin.

Go to Rome or Paris, they are a lot cheaper when it comes to eating out, drinking, getting around. Sure flights going into Dublin are cheap, and hotel accommodation is now cheap because there are so many hotels, many of which no longer employ Irish people because the wages are c**p, and it's also low season so the hotel prices are now a little less than usual.
