  1. If you pick up any International Shipping packages from USPS, you will see the EMS logo. EMS (Express Mail Service) is an international postal service created in 1998 by the UPU (Universal Postal Union), an agency of the United Nations. If you haven't heard of them, you haven't done much international shipping using USPS.

Since mail delivery is so widely government controlled, it was a created cooperative to allow government-controlled shipping to compete with privately owned companies like UPS and Federal Express, who can effectively operate globally and ship a package internationally from start to finish. Also, EMS helped standardize international customs forms and processing.

USPS can't deliver your package to China (or even Canada for that matter), so rather than losing your business, they worked within the UN to create this third party company to act as an intermediary between each country's postal service. 146 country's postal services have adopted EMS.

In my experience, EMS is more reliable than USPS itself, but of course UPS and Fedex are more reliable, but more costly. You can track an EMS tracking number at USPS's website.
