Is Eaman O'Carroll's decision to move to Hull FC the right one for him?
Eaman O’Carroll, the long-serving Wigan Warriors’ prop, has recently turned down Warriors’ offer to pledge his future to Hull FC for three years. In the wake of the decision made by the ex-Wigan player mixed set of views have emerged.
Many may contradict to my view point but I believe that this is a very wise move on the player’s part, who started his rugby league career in 2002 by getting enrolled at the Wigan Academy. Moreover, I believe that his timing could not be more perfect than
this, as he has just returned after spending a year recovering from a career threatening injury.
A brief overview of the player’s profile convinced me that his decision was just right for his progress in rugby league.
First of all, the player is passionate about his rugby league career which is apparent from the fact that he initiated his career at a very young age of fourteen years and that too through the academy system, further clarified that he wanted to take it up
professionally. However, his on-field skills were soon recognised, which translated into his uptake for Wigans in 2005. Since then, the player never looked back on his decision and continued year after year with his debuting club.
2006 was the year when he was taken on board as part of the first grade team, just ahead of the Challenge Cup in April. He was an instant hit with his fans for his enthusiastic on-field presence. The same year saw him featuring in four more games.
In 2007, the player further built on his reputation as a league player and featured in thirteen Super League games. Initially, everyone was skeptical about his playing in his new position because of his size, but the prop proved himself fitting for the role
through his command on field.
Until the end of 2008, O’Carroll had established his on-field brilliance, which had led to another three year contract with Wigans.
Now, that he has reached the end of his previous contract term and has another one from Wigans on the table, his career’s one of the most important decision had to be made. According to me, the player has done justice to his profession by opting for Hull.
Why I support his decision has a few reasons. First of all, I think that the player has learnt the maximum he could by staying at Wigans, who has virtually honed his on field skills to perfection. However, his record reveals that his stay at the same club
is not contributing much to his scorecard despite the fact that he has given so many years at the same club, which should not have been the case.
His association with the club traces back to 2002, which means by 2012, he has already spent a decade at the same club. However, despite such a long period of time, the total points the prop managed to earn by now are only 12, where he touched down only
thrice in a total of 80 games to his credit.
According to my personal evaluations the player is somehow unable to reach his full potential, which is definitely a lot more than the figures displayed on cards. So in view of all above mentioned I would say that may be the same surroundings and the same
set of people around him had pushed the 24-year-old Irish International to be comfortable with whatever little he was adding to his record.
Therefore, by opting for Hull for the next three years, he is definitely moving ahead in his career because this way he will bring a lot more variation to his already tested playing skills with Wigans.
