Is Edmonton a dump?

My friend is planning on moving there. My other friend is saying it is a back-water and dump. Who is right? Both are from Ontario.

I met my wife when she was in Edmonton. We had an opportunity to move there about a year ago, and she said " The money may be o.k. I still have a few friends there, but they could not pay me enough to move back to that hillbilly white trash craphole." So that is coming from someone that lived there 10 years, so I will take her word for it.

I lived in Edmonton for a couple of years, and while it is not exactly a dump it isn't the prettiest either.  Some good things about Edmonton are the work prospects, there are a lot of parks and festivals, and the U of A is good.  Public transit doesn't cover the whole city, if you want availability to the LRT then be on the east side of the city.  Most people drive because of the awful transit, so traffic can be a nightmare.

Anyway, I originally came from a REAL dump, so Edmonton didn't seem that bad to me.

The last time I passed through Edmonton it looked like a city, not a dump site, to me.

any place where u can make $14 an hour working at a fast food joint isnt really a dump..... lotsa jobs lotsa money!

No its not a dump at all - Its a big enough city the only good thing to do there is shopping at the Edmonton mall where they have a HUGE water park. Out of the top cities in Canada it didn't rank in the 25 but Toronto did :) In first place is Banff Alberta

In addition to what Webber said - I would add if they are coming from Ontario they will notice a difference just in the landscape and that may be why it will seem nasty. Ontario (well, southern part where I am) is really green, lots of trees, corn fields, rolling hills, etc - but Edmonton is brown, dried out and pretty flat.

EDIT: No the boom is not over, but although you can make good money there you will also pay through your teeth for housing.
